Glossary

Chronic liver disease – A group of disorders that can lead to cirrhosis (severe scarring of the liver, which is a sign of later-stage liver disease), in which the liver may be unable to function properly.

Platelets – Small cells that circulate in your blood and clump together to form blood clots to help stop bleeding and bruising.

Thrombocytopenia – A condition in which the number of platelets in the blood is below normal levels.

Thrombopoietin (TPO) – A protein made by the liver that helps control the production of platelets.

Thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist – A medicine that acts like TPO to help the body make more of its own platelets.
